Definition

Alloy plate cut to size is flat-rolled stainless or nickel-alloy material — in European practice sheet below roughly 3 mm, plate above it — cut from standard mill formats into the finished geometry on your drawing. The order is never the grade alone: thickness, surface finish, cutting method, tolerance and edge condition all belong to the part, and each is settled before the plate is cut rather than corrected afterwards. The cutting method follows from the part rather than from a machine list — tolerance, thickness and what happens to the edge afterwards decide between laser, waterjet, plasma and shearing. And because a cut edge is where the passive chromium-oxide layer is disturbed, heat tint and free iron picked up from tooling are where corrosion starts on an otherwise correct grade — which is why edge condition belongs on the order line, next to the alloy.

The part is late because the plate is wrong. Rarely the wrong grade — the wrong everything else. 2B where the drawing asked for 1D. A plasma edge on a part that has to be welded. A blank that arrives out of square. Heat tint on a cut edge that starts to rust in a wash-down area. Choosing the grade is the easy decision; it is seldom the one that costs the week.

We supply stainless and higher-alloy plate and sheet cut to your drawing — grade, thickness, finish, cutting method, tolerance and edge condition on one line item. Send a DXF or STEP file, or a dimensioned sketch; if the drawing does not exist, we draw it. Availability and lead time are confirmed at quotation, per grade and per thickness.

Documentation travels with the material. An EN 10204 3.1 inspection certificate, issued by the mill against the heat number, is available on request — ask for it in the RFQ rather than after delivery, because attaching paperwork to a plate that is already on the shop floor is considerably harder. If the part is welded, ground or passivated further down the line, say so: it changes the finish and the edge condition we specify, and sometimes the grade.

What to specify

Grade follows the medium

Do not start from the grade you ordered last time. Give us the medium, the temperature and whether chlorides are in play — from cleaning agents, brine, seawater or process water. 304 covers dry and mildly corrosive duty. 316L buys you molybdenum against chlorides. 904L, Duplex and the nickel alloys begin where 316L stops.

Thickness, format and nesting

Thickness sets the cutting method and most of the price. Format sets the waste. Send the finished part sizes and the quantity, not only the raw sheet size you had in mind — several parts nested out of one sheet usually moves the price further than the grade does.

Finish and which face shows

1D for hot-rolled, pickled heavy plate. 2B as the cold-rolled default. 2R/BA where it has to be bright. Brushed 240 or 320 grain where the surface stays in view. State which face is the visible one and whether the protective film should stay on until after installation.

Cutting method, tolerance and edge

Laser holds the tightest tolerance and leaves heat tint. Waterjet puts no heat into the material and takes thick sections. Plasma is the economical route through heavy plate at a coarser tolerance. Shearing is the fastest straight cut in thin sheet. Tell us what happens to the edge afterwards — welded, machined, painted or left as cut — and the method follows from that.

Materials & variants

304/304L and 316/316L cover most work and come in the widest span of thicknesses and formats. 316Ti and 321 cover the sensitisation window, 904L and Duplex 2205 take chlorides and higher strength, and super duplex 2507, Inconel, Hastelloy and Monel take the aggressive and high-temperature end. The higher alloys are sourced per project rather than held as a standing programme: not every alloy exists in every combination of thickness, format and finish, so availability and lead time are confirmed at quotation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between sheet and plate?

Thickness, by convention — and the convention is regional. In European practice the line sits at roughly 3 mm: below it the material is cold-rolled sheet, above it hot-rolled plate (North American practice puts the split nearer 4.8 mm). The split matters because it decides nearly everything else: 2B and brushed finishes on one side of the line, 1D on the other; EN ISO 9445-2 tolerances against EN 10029; shearing and laser against plasma and waterjet.

Do I need 304 or 316L?

Chlorides decide it. 316L carries 2–3 % molybdenum, and that is what resists pitting from salt, chlorinated cleaning agents and coastal air; 304 does not have it. In dry indoor structures 304 is the sensible buy. If chloride concentration or temperature climbs further, the answer is 904L, Duplex 2205 or a nickel alloy — not more 316L.

Which cutting method should I ask for?

Laser for tight tolerances in thin and medium thickness, at the cost of heat tint on the edge. Waterjet where no heat may enter the material or the thickness is beyond laser range. Plasma for heavy plate where speed outweighs tolerance. Shearing for straight cuts in thin sheet: fastest and cheapest, with slight edge deformation. Send the part and the tolerance you actually need and the method follows.

What tolerance can I expect on a cut part?

As standard industry ranges: roughly ±0.2–0.5 mm on laser and waterjet, ±0.5–2 mm on plasma, all of them widening with thickness. Plate flatness and thickness follow EN 10029, cold-rolled sheet EN ISO 9445-2. The tolerance for your part is confirmed per job — a tighter class is usually possible, but it has to be asked for in the RFQ, not assumed.

Can you supply a material certificate with the plate?

Yes, on request. An EN 10204 3.1 inspection certificate is issued by the mill against the heat number of the material and is traceable to what you receive; a 2.2 test report is the lighter alternative. It documents the material, not the supplier. Ask for it at RFQ stage — matching paperwork to a plate after delivery is a great deal harder.

Will you cut single pieces, or is there a minimum quantity?

Single blanks are a normal request. Quantity mostly changes the price per part — through nesting and setup — rather than whether the part can be quoted at all. Whether a minimum applies for a particular grade, thickness or format is confirmed at quotation.

Why is my stainless plate showing rust spots?

Almost never the grade. Three usual causes: free iron picked up from carbon-steel tooling, brushes or grinding dust; heat tint left on a cut or a weld, where the chromium-oxide layer is depleted; and standing moisture on an unpassivated edge. Pickling and passivation restore the passive layer. Specifying the edge treatment up front is cheaper than doing it on the finished machine.

Can the plate be delivered brushed on one side and filmed?

Yes. Brushed 240 or 320 grain is normally supplied with protective film on the finished face, so handling and fabrication marks land on the film instead of the steel. Tell us which face is the show side and whether the film has to survive welding or installation — that changes the film type.
