Definition

Tying wire is soft annealed wire supplied on coils, on spools or as pre-cut loop ties, used to bundle, fix and fasten rather than to carry load. It works because the wire is annealed dead soft: twist it and it stays twisted, with no springback to open the joint again — the twist itself is the fastener. A tie keeps holding as long as its finish survives the environment it sits in; once the coating is gone, the wire corrodes at the twist first, where it was cold-worked.

Tying wire gets ordered by diameter and by the kilo, which is exactly how the wrong wire keeps arriving. It springs open in the fitter's hand, or it rusts through in a season and stains everything it was holding. Neither is bad luck. The first was decided by temper, the second by finish, and both were decided on the order line.

We supply tying wire in soft annealed steel, galvanised and in stainless 304 and 316L — on coils, on spools that fit the tying tool, and as pre-cut loop ties. Send the diameter, the finish, the presentation and the annual quantity. Availability and lead time are confirmed at quotation. If the tie has to match an existing tool or a fixed cut length, send that with the enquiry rather than after it.

Where the tie stays in the process, the finish stops being a price question. Zinc flakes, and in a food or pharmaceutical plant a flake is a foreign body. Zinc on austenitic stainless is worse: heat the joint for a repair weld and molten zinc can embrittle the steel underneath it. In wet, chlorinated or washdown positions a galvanised tie is a corrosion source sitting against the structure it is holding together. That is where 316L stops being an upgrade and becomes the specification.

What to specify

Temper, before diameter

Hard drawn wire is stronger and useless here: twist it and it springs back, so the joint loosens before any load arrives. Tying wire is annealed dead soft on purpose — the twist has to hold itself. Ask for soft annealed by name. "Wire, 1.4 mm" is not a specification.

The finish the environment allows

Bright annealed and bright drawn are two products wearing one word. Bright annealed wire is drawn bright and then softened, so it ties; bright drawn wire never saw the furnace and springs open. Order bright annealed by name — it is for indoors and for the short term. Black annealed carries a thin oil film that holds off rust for a few months, no longer. Galvanising buys years in the open. Stainless is the only finish that belongs in a wet, chlorinated, food or in-process position. Tell us where the tie ends up and how long it stays there.

How the tie is actually made

By hand, with pincers, with a battery tying tool, or as a ready-made loop tie. A tool fixes the choice for you: diameter, spool format and coating follow the machine, not preference. If a tying tool is in play, send its make and model. If the work is repetitive and manual, pre-cut double-loop ties usually beat a coil — more per tie, less per hour.

Diameter, presentation and quantity

Diameter follows the job: roughly 1.0–1.6 mm for reinforcement and mesh, heavier for bundling bar and profile. Coil weight decides handling — 1 to 5 kg coils go up a ladder, 25 kg coils stay on the pallet. State diameter, coil or spool weight, cut length if any, and the quantity per call-off. Materials & variants

Soft annealed low-carbon steel is the default, bright annealed or black annealed, and galvanised where the tie has to survive outdoors. Stainless 304 covers general corrosion; 316L is the choice for chlorides, washdown and any position with product contact. PVC-coated wire is supplied for outdoor and horticultural work. Higher alloys — Duplex, Inconel, Monel — are possible for special duty; availability and lead time for those are confirmed at quotation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between tying wire and binding wire?

None. Both names describe the same soft annealed wire; which one you hear depends on the trade and the country — binddraad in Dutch, Bindedraht or Rödeldraht in German. If the distinction matters in your specification, state the diameter, the temper and the finish instead of the name.

Why does my tying wire spring open when I twist it?

It is not annealed. Hard drawn or bright drawn wire keeps its spring: the twist relaxes the moment the pliers let go and the bundle works loose. Bright drawn is not bright annealed — the annealed grade is drawn bright and then softened, and it ties. Tying wire has to be soft annealed — dead soft — so the twist stays where you put it. If the coil is unmarked, a hand test settles it: soft wire holds a sharp bend, hard wire opens up.

When do I have to use stainless binding wire?

Whenever the tie stays in a corrosive or food environment. Washdown areas, chlorinated water, coastal and marine exposure, anything inside a process vessel or filter housing, anything in contact with product. In those positions a galvanised tie is not the cheaper option, it is a contamination and corrosion source. 316L is the usual answer; 304 is enough where chlorides play no part.

Can I use galvanised tie wire on a stainless steel structure?

Not where it matters. Zinc against stainless corrodes preferentially and leaves a deposit, and zinc contamination on austenitic stainless is a real risk the moment the joint is heated — molten zinc can embrittle the steel during welding. Tie stainless with stainless. It costs more per kilo and nothing per repair.

Black annealed or galvanised — which should I order?

Black annealed wire is annealed and lightly oiled: fine indoors, fine for bundles that ship and get cut open again, not fine for a season outdoors. Galvanised wire carries a zinc layer that buys years in the open, and hot-dip carries far more zinc than electro-galvanising, so it lasts accordingly. Say where the tie sits and how long it has to hold.

Which diameter should I specify?

For reinforcement and mesh work the common band is roughly 1.0–1.6 mm; bundling bar, tube and profile moves to 1.6–2.5 mm and heavier. Thicker is not automatically better: as a workshop rule of thumb, above about 2 mm the wire no longer twists comfortably by hand and the job needs a tool. Tell us what is being tied and how, and the diameter follows from that.

Do you supply pre-cut loop ties as well as coils?

Yes. Pre-cut ties come in the usual length range with a single or double loop, ready to hook and twist. They cost more per tie than wire off a coil and less per hour of labour, which is why repetitive site work runs on them. Give the length, the diameter, the finish and the quantity per box.

What data do you need for a quotation?

Diameter, temper, finish and the presentation: coil weight, spool format or cut length. Add what is being tied, where the tie ends up, and the quantity per call-off. If a tying tool is involved, its make and model. Availability and lead time are confirmed at quotation once that is on the table.
