Definition

A filter mat is a layered sheet of filter media — knitted or woven wire mesh, a synthetic nonwoven, or the two combined — cut to the size of the housing it drops into. Particles are held in the depth of the mat rather than on its face: a coarse layer takes the dust load, a finer layer sets the separation, and a support layer keeps the pack in shape under flow. A mat keeps working until its dust holding capacity is used up; from that point pressure drop climbs and the mat is cleaned or replaced.

Filter mats rarely fail dramatically. Usually the mat that arrived is not the mat that was specified: a class that looked close enough on paper, a thickness that flattens inside the frame, a cut two millimetres short so unfiltered air walks around the media. The differential gauge stays reassuringly low and the fouling turns up downstream instead.

We supply filter mats cut to size, in wire mesh or synthetic media, as a single layer or as a built-up pack. Send the frame dimensions, the air or liquid rate, the class you have to meet and what the mat has to hold back. If the housing has a drawing we work from it; if it does not, the old mat is the pattern.

Metal mesh mats are washable: out, degrease or backflush, back in — which is why they dominate extract hoods, oil mist and hot gas duty. Synthetic mats cost less per piece and leave at the change interval. Both are supplied loose and cut to size, or mounted in a frame with the handles and clips the housing expects.

What to specify

Frame size and how the mat is held

The mat follows the frame, not the sheet currently lying in it. Give the clear opening, the depth of the rebate and how the mat is clamped. Two millimetres of slack is all it takes for air to bypass the media and make a good filter read like a clean one. That is why mats are supplied slightly oversize, never undersize.

The class you have to meet

ISO 16890 (ISO Coarse, ePM10) replaced EN 779 for general ventilation, but existing housings still carry G4 or M5 labels. Send the class printed on the current filter and the standard it was tested to. A class correlated from real test data beats a class guessed from a part number.

Layer build-up

One layer is seldom the answer. A coarse layer absorbs the dust load, the fine media sets the separation, a support layer stops the pack bulging as pressure drop rises. Tell us what the mat must hold back, the starting pressure drop and the one you replace at.

Cleaning regime and temperature

Metal is washed and reinstalled; synthetic is thrown away. That is a cost decision, not a quality decision. State the change interval, the cleaning method and the operating temperature — those three together decide whether metal or synthetic is the right medium.

Materials & variants

Metal mats are supplied in stainless 304 and 316L, in galvanised steel and in aluminium; synthetic mats in polyester (PES) and polypropylene (PP), including progressively built-up grades. For corrosive or hot gas duty the higher alloys — Duplex, Inconel, Monel — are an option; availability and lead time for those are confirmed at quotation. Frames, retaining mesh and clips are matched to the medium unless the specification says otherwise.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a filter mat and a filter panel?

The frame, and nothing else. A filter mat is the media itself, cut to size and laid loose in the rebate or held under a clamp. Put that same media in a frame with a retaining mesh and it is called a panel. We supply both — the housing decides which of the two fits.

Which filter class do I need, ISO 16890 or EN 779?

EN ISO 16890 took over for general ventilation when EN 779:2012 was withdrawn in 2018; it classes media as ISO Coarse, ePM10, ePM2,5 or ePM1. The old G, M and F classes are still printed on thousands of filters in service. There is no official conversion between the two — the standards measure different things. Send what the current filter says, with its test data where you have it: the class is correlated from that data, not converted from a label.

Can filter mats be washed and reused?

Metal mesh mats can. They are degreased or backflushed, dried and refitted, which is why they are the default in kitchen extract and oil-mist duty. Synthetic mats are not washable in any meaningful sense: cleaning opens the media structure and the class it was rated to no longer applies.

Do you supply the mats with a frame?

Both ways. Unframed cut sheets for housings with their own retaining system, or framed mats in stainless, galvanised steel, aluminium or board, with handles and clips to suit. Give the frame type you have and the replacement drops straight into the existing housing.

How thick should the mat be?

Thickness buys service life, not fineness. A thicker mat holds more dust before pressure drop rises, so it stretches the change interval; the media grade is what sets the separation. Doubling thickness to reach a finer class is the wrong lever — change the grade instead.

Can a filter mat capture sub-micron particles?

Not on its own. A mat is a depth pre-filter: it protects the fine stage behind it and takes the coarse load off it. For sub-micron duty you need a fine filter or a cartridge downstream, and any sub-micron rating is confirmed per application once the process data is on the table.

What data do you need for a quotation?

Frame or opening dimensions and thickness, the filter class and the standard behind it, the medium and its temperature, the air or liquid rate, framed or unframed, the quantity and your change interval. A photograph of the housing with the old mat in it usually answers half of these at once.
